What will i do when i die?
How do you get tested for COVID-19 in the US? Why does it take so long? Backstory: I’m a single mother of two, with rheumatoid arthritis (and suppressing my immune system with Cimzia), psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, lupus, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, heterozygus alpha 1 antitrypsn deficiency, diabetes, asthma, and other stuff that I’m not even going to bother to list. I’ve got a boatload of health problems that make coronavirus especially dangerous. I also don’t run fevers – when we all had the flu (confirmed by the lab) a month ago, I didn’t go above 97.7. The last time I had a fever was 15 years ago, when I had a kidney infection. A week and a half ago I traveled for work, including a 5 hour layover in O’Hare, with ALL THE PEOPLE walking by. Friday I got sick. It started with a sore throat and very achy. My son got sick the day after, with a 103 fever and sore throat, and I got a headache (still do). Sunday my daughter woke up with conjunctivitis and body aches, and a 100.5 fever. We’d already had the flu go through our house, so I was concerned. I called the local hospital, and they told me not to bother coming in, because it was “probably the flu” and there was nothing they could do anyway – including testing for coronavirus if you didn’t travel to China or have proven contact with someone with the virus. At this point I’m starting to get antsy, as there’s something wrong with us. Monday morning my daughter’s eyes were glued shut, my son still had a 103 fever, and I briefly went to 100 and had a light cough. I got a hold of my regular Dr.’s office, and they brought us in to check for strep and the flu. They checked my son for strep, as he had the highest fever (I should also note he’s been acting like there’s absolutely nothing wrong the entire time, which is typical of him!), and me for flu. They reiterate that that they can’t check for coronavirus unless someone is really in danger (uh) and has traveled internationally or come into contact with someone with COVID-19. We go home and await the results of the flu test. Yeah, it’s negative. But finally, because of all my conditions and all the collective symptoms in the house, they have decided to send the same swab that they used for the flu test for coronavirus testing, if I’m ok with it. OF COURSE I’M OK WITH IT! So, I finally am getting tested. It’s still going to take 3-7 days for results.

LITERALLY BUMPING INTO SOMEONE – ANY REAL RISK? Sorry — this may sound like paranoia. I live in an apartment building and as I was turning a corner inside the building, someone coming from the opposite side of the corner I was turning literally bumped into me for a second. He had no mask on, while I had a mask and glasses on. This was literally a 1-2 second “interaction” as we essentially bumped into each other, but kept moving. I assume this is very low risk, but just seeing what anyone else may think. The area where I am at now was the epicenter of the pandemic when it began, but of course is doing much, much better now. Just concerns me this guy had no mask on (I think he said “sorry” as we walked past each other), and by bumping into me, we clearly weren’t 6 feet apart (and this was inside the building). But this was as brief of an exposure as you can get and I did have a mask on, although he did not. Thoughts?
