Coronavirus/Covid-19 and how it affects people with high blood pressure
Dear Fellow FMD Peeps:
Please read the link below, which explains how the virus appears to enter via the ACE2 receptor and how it affects the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone (RAAS) system. Anyone with FMD should read this and take extra precautions. So many people aren’t taking this virus seriously and are still going out, not self-isolating, putting themselves and others at risk. Given the extreme risks to people with high blood pressure (HBP), I post this in hopes that word will spread, not only to FMD patients but to healthcare workers all over the country. I actually heard of physicians (allegedly in an ER in Atlanta) making jokes and not taking this virus seriously. People with FMD do not have the luxury of playing around with a virus that has such a negative impact on the RAAS system. We have enough issues with HBP–we certainly don’t need a deadly virus thrown into the mix.
If you have your physician’s email, maybe consider forwarding to them the links below. If they aren’t aware of the virus’s relationship to HBP, they should be. I suspect many physicians treating Coronavirus patients are of the pulmonary variety, not the cardio-vascular variety, and as such our docs may not be aware of the role our disease could play in treating the virus.
Keep your distance, wash your hands often and stay safe out there…(or shoudl I say, in there?). Also, try not to touch your face. Ha! Man is that ever a fun exercise in futility.
Another physician confirms the HBP relationship:
